Skanska, a leading global construction and development company, in partnership with Tyler-based HGR General Contractors, has broken ground on the University of Texas at Tyler’s Medical Education Building in Tyler, East Texas. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and the project is the UT System’s seventh medical school in Northeast Texas. The Medical Education Building will support interdisciplinary education for graduate medical students, resident training, and nursing, and will aid as part of a medical education program expansion throughout the UT Health East Texas Health System.
The building process for the five-story, nearly 23,040-m2 (248,000-sf) facility has now started, and the opening is slated for March 2025. The new building will provide outpatient and specialty clinical services with exam rooms, specimen collection/processing, and imaging facilities. The Medical Education Building combines two of Skanska’s specialties, healthcare, and education. It is an honor for Skanska to partner with UT Tyler and build this state-of-the-art facility that will have a significant impact on the education and subsequent health of the region, says Dennis Yung, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Skanska North Texas.
